“Anyone can be great because anyone can serve”
- Dr. Martin Luther King
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme (BGCOP) offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities for everyone. Whether you have one hour to give or one year to dedicate, we would love to have you make a difference in our members’ lives.

Anyone who is 14 years or older can become a BGCOP volunteer. Applicants under 18 must have parental consent. Students may wish to volunteer to earn school credits, based on agreements between their school and BGCOP. Upon completion the student will receive a letter of hour verification. All adults are subject to a Live Scan at no charge provided by the Oxnard Police Department.

Coaches and Officials — Sports and recreational activities are proven to keep kids in good physical shape, help social interaction, boost energy, keep them out of trouble, and encourage discipline and sportsmanship. Now you can help make sure that every child in our area has a chance to participate in these great activities. Attention parents, college students and caring adults: we need coaches and officials for cheerleading, dance, flag football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, boxing, weight training, soccer and track. Practices are weeknights and game days are held on Saturdays.
Guest Speakers — We always welcome guest speakers who can address issues of interest and importance to our young members, especially in subjects such as college preparation, drug prevention, resume writing, job professions, etc. If you have an area of expertise that you are eager to impart to our teens, we'd love to hear from you!
Workshop Leader — Do you have a special skill? Scrap booking, art, music, dance, photography perhaps? We welcome the opportunity to broaden our Club members' horizons in a broad spectrum of areas.
Leadership Advisors — BGCOP includes citizenship among the many arenas to which we try to expose our members. Volunteer to advise members in our Torch or Keystone leadership clubs that expose youth to the importance of good citizenship; teach the skills of democracy, planning events, team work, and the value of community service. Volunteers must be over 24 years old and be able to make a one-year commitment to the group they facilitate. Time commitment is two hours per week.
Fundraising — Volunteers in this arena work on special events and fundraising for the club. Time is flexible and can sometimes take place evenings and weekends. There are monthly meetings to coordinate efforts and you control how much time you spend by what you sign up for. Some options include: annual auction, community events, golf tournament, special events, and grant writing.
Maintenance — Our clubs are used by over 300 youth DAILY and our equipment and facilities get extreme use by active kids. If you have a skill or an interest in this area, your help can save the club dollars better spent on providing activities for youth, and you can help create an environment where members feel comfortable and at-home. Areas may include: construction, painting, grounds keeping, landscaping, and van repair.
Sailing Program — Are you ASA or US sailing certified? BGCOP is looking for certified instructors who would like to help lead our new youth sailing program. The program hours vary depending on the season, but typically take place between 12:30-5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday. Ideal candidates will share a love for water and a passion for working with children. Participant ages range from 10-18 years old.
AMP (Aftercare Mentoring Program) — Volunteers wanted for our new mentoring program working with youth in the Juvenile Justice Facility. Desirable candidates would have an interest in working with young offenders and a desire to make a positive difference in the lives of young people. Volunteers must be 21 years of age or older, able to make a one-year commitment of at least two hours a week and complete a criminal background check. Mentors will work with youth inside the facility as well as in the community.
Homework Tutor — Every afternoon, when the kids start pouring into our Clubs, we have "Power Hour," during which kids can get their homework done before they engage in our enrichment programs. We need volunteers to assist our members with their homework as well as additional educational skills. Tutors are needed at all three club sites as well as at our after school programs in El Rio, Oxnard and Port Hueneme year -round. We ask that tutors dedicate a minimum of one hour between 2-6 p.m. weekdays.

Volunteer time is a tax-deductible and Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme is happy to provide verification letters or reference letters for any volunteer. Additionally, all volunteers are eligible to receive the Presidential Volunteer Service Award (for more information, click here), which is presented at our annual volunteer recognition dinner.
